PPH Forms Partnership to Help Support Hospital of The Future in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Palomar Pomerado Health (PPH) has teamed up with basketball star Dikembe Mutombo to heal, comfort, and promote health in his native country. Following the death of Mutombo’s mother Biamba Marie, because of a lack of hospital facilities, Mutombo began a mission to build a state-of-the-art hospital named after his mom in Kinshasa, the capital city of the DRC. PPH is helping support that mission by establishing a “sister hospital” relationship between the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital and Pomerado Hospital in Poway, CA.

Qualcomm, the Classroom of the Future Foundation, the City of Poway, and Rotary International are also a part of this powerful partnership bringing together the finest technology and health care from San Diego County to the DRC. “It’s very exciting for us to be on the ground floor, exploring ways to bring cutting-edge wireless technologies to support the Biamba Marie Mutombo Hospital in the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Tom O’Neill, vice president for business development for Qualcomm.

Mutombo has already invested $15- million of his own money to build the $29- million 300- bed facility. When completed in June of 2007, it will be fully equipped with an emergency room, surgery suites, a women’s center and a teaching hospital, built on 52- acres. Mutombo also has a vision of establishing satellite health clinics around the DRC.

The partnership between PPH and the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation is timely, as PPH is also in the stages of planning and building the hospital of the future in North San Diego County. “Health care in the Democratic Republic of Congo is limited and not accessible. With education and some medical supplies, hundreds of children could be saved. We have an opportunity to give these people hope, and a chance to have access to basic medical services we sometimes take for granted. It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to help them,” says Jim Flinn, chief administrative officer for Pomerado Hospital.
