Mutombo and Perkins Join State Department for South Sudan Sports Envoy
The National Basketball Association
October 15, 2025
NBA Legends Dikembe Mutombo and Sam Perkins recently visited South Sudan to lead basketball clinics, team building exercises and life skills sessions for more than 1,000 local boys and girls as part of the U.S. State Department's Sports Envoy program. The ongoing program uses the power of sport to bring people together while encouraging the development of basketball on a grassroots level. Since 2005, more than 50 NBA and WNBA representatives have traveled overseas with the State Department as ambassadors of sport, conducting clinics, visiting schools, and speaking to youth about the importance of an education, positive health practices, and respect for diversity.
