Dikembe welcomed U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Atlanta, GA – On Tuesday, August 9, 2022, NBA Hall of Famer Dikembe Mutombo will welcome U.S. Secretary of State, Antony J. Blinken to his homeland, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (“DRC”).  

During Secretary Blinken’s high-level visit to the Congo, he will meet with senior DRC government officials and members of civil society to discuss their mutual interest in ensuring free, inclusive, and fair elections in 2023, promoting respect for human rights and protecting fundamental freedoms. He will also focus on combating corruption, supporting trade and investment, addressing the climate crisis, building agricultural resilience, and support regional African efforts to advance peace in eastern DRC and the broader Great Lakes region. 

Later this evening, Mutombo will update Secretary Blinken about his Foundation’s current humanitarian projects in the region including the new Samuel Mutombo Institute of Science and Entrepreneurship located in the Kasai-Oriental province. This new school named in memory of Mutombo’s father opened in November 2021 with an enrollment of 420 students (K – 6th grade) with short term plans to add a middle school and high school.

Schedule permitting, Mutombo will accompany Secretary Blinken on a visit to the Biamba Marie Mutombo hospital in Kinshasa. This hospital, named in memory of Mutombo’s mother opened in December 2007 and has treated over 700,000 patients. Back in 2009, Mutombo welcomed then U.S. Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton on her first official visit to the DRC. During that visit, Mutombo accompanied Secretary Clinton on a tour of the hospital and he later joined the former Secretary of State at a standing room only townhall meeting.
